Splurge vs. Steal

Good morning, and happy halfway {through your week} to you! I’ve had such an exhausting week, I’m counting down the minutes to the weekend. I’ll spare you the actual minute count because it’s very high right now, and I don’t want to scare you.

Let’s talk about lip products. Now, I’m new to the lip color game, and wearing dark lip colors isn’t an every day occurrence for me, mainly something I do for a night out or time on the weekends, and I reserve weekdays for a more nude-ish looking tone of lip color. The one thing I hated about most lipsticks that I had used {or even lip glosses for that matter} was that they were shiny, sticky, and the color rubbed off everywhere. It wasn’t a pretty site and had me thinking “Michele, you’ll never love lip colors, you’ll be destined to wear Burt’s Bee’s lip balm for your entire life..and nothing else.”

And then my birthday happened.

A few months back, I got a birthday treat from Sephora. Part of the gift I received was two trial sizes of the new NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil {check it our here.} Love at first sight doesn’t even begin to describe how much I fell in love with this product. This lip color is satiny smooth, applies strong with only one coat, and the color payoff is insane. The best part? It’s a matte color! No more shine, no more sticky feeling, it literally feels like heaven on your lips. The lasting power is pretty decent, I would say I could go about 2 and a half to 3 hours without having to reapply this product. What’s the downfall, you ask? The price tag. These lip pencils come in at a pretty high number of $26 dollars a pop, and there really isn’t a ton of product there. In order to purchase all of the colors of this product I would want to, it would cost me a pretty penny, and I didn’t want to spend that much on a lip color that I only would wear on a few occasions.

That’s where the dupes come in. Once I knew how much I loved this product, I knew I had to be on a dupe hunt immediately. While out perusing the aisles of Target {which, I might add, I could do for hours and hours and…} I stumbled across the holy grail. Who would swoop in to save the day?

ELF! Now I thought I would be finding my secret matte lip pencil weapon from Maybelline, perhaps Wet N Wild, maybe even Revlon, but I should have know that ELF would come in to save the day. At just $3 a pencil, let me repeat, just $3 a pencil, I knew I had to snatch up a few to try. This product had big shoes to fill, as I love the NARS product so much, so I was a big hesitant of these dupe pencils, I mean they were so reasonable, how would they ever compare?

And then they did.

These ELF lip pencils were everything I was looking for. Okay, so they aren’t exactly the same as the NARS product, but this product blew me away. I decided my first time to try it would be a night I was hosting a BBQ at the house. I was running around, cooking everything, outside in the 86 degree heat, by a hot oven, drinking mojitos, eating burgers, and this lip product stayed on for 6 hours without even budging. It shockingly beat NARS lip pencils lasting power by more than 4 hours. Now, you do have to apply about two coats of this product as opposed to only one coat of the NARS pencil, but for $23 dollars cheaper, that’s a sacrifice that I’m willing to make.

  1. Okay, I have tried the NARS red color and I LOVE it! I got it from my mother. I haven’t used it since the first time because I knew there wasn’t a lot of product and I didn’t want to waste it. So now I’m super excited to try the dupe!! Thanks for sharing this!

    1. I have the Red Nars color as well, and you are going to be SO glad to try these ELF ones. They have a red color that is almost the exact match of the NARS red color. Let me know how you like it!
